Just a couple days ago, GSB! discussed how Paul Konerko possibly landing on the 7-day DL could be a blessing in disguise. On Friday, he did indeed get placed on the DL, as he’ll be able to rest up and come back with no concussion questions and ready to go for the last month and a half of the season.
We, like the rest of speculators surround the team, assumed it’d be Dan Johnson or Connor Jackson that’d get the call up from AAA as they could help fill in at the corner infield positions and provide major league-experienced bats with pop. But today, according to Robin Ventura’s lineup card, it’s former south sider DeWayne Wise getting the call up for the next week-or-so.

Wise hit a formidable .262 with 3 HR and 8 driven in for the Yankees this year before getting dropped and joining the Sox’ AAA affiliate Charlotte Knights.
Overall, this call up isn’t going to have a very big impact on the teams’ season, if it has one at all; remember that he’ll probably be sent back down next week. But nonetheless, it’s great to see Wise back in a White Sox uniform. In 271 at bats for the Sox in 2008 & 2009 combined, he hit in the mid-low .200’s with 25 XBH, all while playing very good defense in the outfield. He is most notable remembered for making “the perfect catch,” which helped preserve Mark Buehrle’s perfect game back in ’09.
Wise joins Jordan Danks as backup outfielders currently on the team, and will probably be backing up the starters for the next handful of games, as Jordan Danks’ walk-off HR may have earned him some starts until Konerko is back with the team. And regardless of if/when Wise does get sent back down, he’ll likely be one of the team’s September call ups, as the veteran bat off the bench will be an asset throughout the last month-or-so of the year.
