– Well, really rough game for the Pale Hose today. Even though the pitching matchup looked to be in the Cubs favor, as fans we should never expect routs. All these guys are on the MLB roster, so we should expect them to preform like MLB players when they are out there.
– With that said, I think it’s pretty clear now that Zach Stewart does not belong on an MLB roster. Whether it be Dylan Axelrod or someone else, there has got to be someone in our system that can perform better in the spot starter/long relief role than Stewart has. If Danks can recover quickly though, this could become a moot point, as Phil Humber will likely take over that role.
– So, should Stewart have gotten the start tonight? It is kind of a weird decision, and it’s clear now that Robin has had a horrible two days as a manager. Even if it was to ease the load on Sale and Peay, it was just a weird decision with really weird timing even if you thought you could get away with it against a bad team.
– Will Ohman is a guy who also does not belong on a big league roster. He likely won’t accept a AAA assignment, so the Sox will have to just cut ties with him. Still, I say good riddance. I don’t need to point out examples of him not preforming this season. You all have seen plenty.
– Nate Jones may have been the worst out of all of them tonight. While he’s been pretty reliable for most of this season, he’s also let a lot of inherited runners score. It’s obvious he’s more comfortable starting an inning rather than closing one, but sorry Nate, bullpen guys need to be comfortable doing both.
– Offensively, I felt like the Sox had opportunities early to get things going, but took too many early fastballs from Garza. It looked like the Sox were being too tentative at the plate. There’s a time for working the count, but when a guy is throwing a lot of first and second pitch fastballs and you know it, you should jump on them if they are there.
– Even though the Sox pitchers were bad and the wind was crazy, I have to tip my cap to the Cubs tonight. Five homeruns in a game deserves some credit.
The good thing about baseball is that there is almost always a game the next day, and you always have an opportunity to work out of a funk. The Sox get that tomorrow with one of their horses on the bump in Jake Peavy. It’s one game of a six-game homestand, so let’s wait to call it an absolute failure. This team needs to turn it around though, as Detroit is catching fire, and Cleveland is only half a game back.
