This was such a frustrating game on so many levels. The team made FOUR errors, Alcides Escobar had four infield hits, and yet we still had a shot to win this ballgame. Fortunately, Detroit lost to Baltimore, so we aren’t losing any of our division lead tonight.
Untimely Pitching
Zach has said all year long that Jake Peavy’s number have been less than impressive based on the fact that he has given up a great deal of runs after the Sox build some momentum the half-inning before. Well, Peavy let it happen in the sixth and Brett Myers let it happen in the eighth. It was just a horribly frustrating night for the pitching staff.
What Happened to the Defense?
I’m not sure to be honest, but I also don’t expect this to be a trend. The Sox have been solid on defense all season long, and this is one of those once-in-a-season type of games. I’d bet money they don’t make four or even three errors in a single game again the rest of the season.
The Royals?
I don’t get it. I just do not get it. It’s almost getting like the Twins were for years, as the Sox now looks like they are playing nervous and scared against this Royals team. Why are we making the mistake of pitching to Billy Butler three times? I believe the defense will be fine, but I also think tonight’s defense is a byproduct of this.
Milestones
The only really good part about this game is that two Sox hitters reached career milestones in the eighth inning: as Kevin Youkilis had his 1,000th hit and Adam Dunn hit his 400th home run, a 420+ foot bomb into the left field fountain (that a fan even jumped into for the ball!). What a year for milestones for this team, as Paul Konerko also hit #400 back in April.
