Monday night was a good comeback win late for the Sox, and Tuesday was a disappointing late loss for the team as Jake Peavy just didn’t have enough in the 7th inning.
Tonight it’s Jeremy Guthrie taking on Jose Quintana, in what I think will actually be an interesting matchup. Guthrie, since coming over from the Rockies is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA. After the Sox got shut down for the most part by Cy Chen last night, it’ll be interesting to see how they fare against another pitcher that also has not done well of late.
Quintana had his last start skipped so he should be more than ready to make this start. I expect him to come out, change speeds, hit his spots, and leave the rest up to the baseball gods. A pitch-to-contact-style pitcher just has to do that sometimes. He faced Kansas City the first game after the All-Star break and despite getting a couple of bad breaks that could’ve had his line looking a lot better than it did, he let up 5 runs in 5 innings.
It’s hard to know what to expect from “Q” tonight, but he has come up big so many times for the Sox, shutting down very good offenses time and time again, so we know he “has it in him.”
What I do know is that he’ll need support from his offense, which hasn’t been the case in many of his best starts this year. They need to come out aggressively and do what we know they can do. Plus “Grab Some Bench!” will be in attendance, and I sure don’t feel like being let down by the bats the first time I get to see “Q” throw.
Bear down.
