Going in to Saturday afternoon’s bout against the Yankees, the White Sox had won 4 straight games and 6 of their last 7 overall. So after the bats were shut down by day-game ninja Hiroki Kuroda (who still hasn’t let up a run in day games yet this year), I don’t have much to say other than the fact that this one just wasn’t ours; we just didn’t quite have it.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t draw a positive from the lackluster, frustrating game.
– As most of you probably already know, the run support for Jake Peavy, or lack there of, has been astounding. Peavy has an ERA below 3.00, but a mediocre 6-5 record. In his 5 losses, Peavy has amassed a 2.31 ERA and 0.95 WHIP, while compiling 3 complete games and 4 (nearly 5) quality starts.
– Will this continue to be a consistent disappointment every five days the rest of the season? No, I don’t think so. Just look to Jose Quintana, who also hadn’t been getting run support. He got a win in which he let up 6 runs in 6 innings on Friday. So as we’ve seen, a pattern like the one the offense is enduring in Peavy’s starts is merely a coincidence. If the “Jakemeister” continues to pitch as well as he has all year, we have ourselves a rock-solid arm at the front of our rotation in the former NL Cy Young.
In short, don’t worry about Peavy. I don’t think he’s had his good stuff his last 2 starts, and while hehas taken 2 losses, he’s only let up 7 runs in 15 innings.
So take a deep breath, Sox fans. There’s still a shot to take the series tomorrow afternoon as Gavin Floyd faces off against Phil Hughes, in what should be a battle of two filthy curveballs.
